Blue LED Hailed as a Technology Poised to Have “Greatest Benefit on Mankind”

Nobel Prize in Physics is Landmark for LED

MELBOURNE, Fla.–(BUSINESS WIRE)–Oct. 13, 2014– This past week three pioneers of blue LED technology, Isamu Akasaki, Hiroshi Amano and Shuji Nakamura, were awarded the 2014 Nobel Prize in Physics. Each year, the Nobel Prize in Physics is awarded to a maximum of three individuals whose advancements in their field are represented as having “the greatest benefit on mankind.”

Red and green LEDs have existed since the middle of the 20^th century, but it wasn’t until the 1990’s that these Nobel laureates were able to create blue LEDs. The blue LED has since made it possible to create a bright, energy-saving, non-toxic white LED light source.
