Blue LED Hailed as a Technology Poised to Have “Greatest Benefit on Mankind”

Nobel Prize in Physics is Landmark for LED

MELBOURNE, Fla.–(BUSINESS WIRE)–Oct. 13, 2014– This past week three pioneers of blue LED technology, Isamu Akasaki, Hiroshi Amano and Shuji Nakamura, were awarded the 2014 Nobel Prize in Physics. Each year, the Nobel Prize in Physics is awarded to a maximum of three individuals whose advancements in their field are represented as having “the greatest benefit on mankind.”

Red and green LEDs have existed since the middle of the 20th century, but it wasn’t until the 1990’s that these Nobel laureates were able to create blue LEDs. The blue LED has since made it possible to create a bright, energy-saving, non-toxic white LED light source.

Lighting Science is encouraged by the scientific community’s public embrace of LED technology as the energy-efficient lighting source of the future. “By inventing state-of-the-art LED technology that will better humanity and our planet, our products become global differentiators that can change lives,” said Ed Bednarcik, CEO of Lighting Science Group. “We understand the importance LEDs play in creating clean, energy-efficient light that can help lower the cost of energy worldwide, and make an environmental and biological impact on generations to come.”

“Lighting Science understands that LED technology must go beyond using less energy; LEDs must contribute more than light alone,” says Robert Soler, Lighting Science Group’s Director of Lighting Research. “We, as an industry, must take that technology one step further and develop lighting systems that create a balance between our vision and the biological and environmental systems they affect.”
